PROJECT WINNIE

Help us Build an Orphanage in Western Kenya

Sanna, meeting the children at Kayanet Education Center

Sanna, meeting the children at Kayanet Education Center

What: Our goal is to raise funds to build a dormitory at an elementary school in Western Kenya. The dormitory will serve dual purposes, as a home for the orphaned children from the region and as a dormitory for boarding students.

Why: Abortion is illegal in Kenya, punishable by life in prison. Despite this, unplanned pregnancies occur - especially on and around the campus of Moi University.   Rather than abort and face life in prison, sadly many young mothers abandon their babies.  Dr. Julius Sang, a doctor in the region cares for the rescued babies and sees to it that they are placed into the care of guardian families.  As the babies grow older, the goal is to ensure they receive an education and are sent to school.  Many of the guardian families struggle to provide for the needs of the orphan children.  In some extreme cases, the orphan children live with families where they are shunned or face abuse.  They are in need of a safe place to live and sleep.  Project Winnie ensures the children will have stability, and a safe place to call home.  The children's home will be built in the yard of Kayanet Education Center, the local primary school.  This school currently fundraises on an annual basis to cover the costs of the orphan students.  There are 53 students enrolled at Kayanet Education Center, of which 18 are orphans.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 to build the dormitory / children's home, which can accommodate up to 90 students, and will create a scholarship fund for less fortunate students who are not able to attend school without financial assistance.  Donate now, or contact us to discuss collaboration!

Project Notes:

  • $2,000 / year = The expected additional revenues generated by using the new building as a dormitory (based on boarding fees of $200/year, and a conservative estimate of 10 students who will pay the additional fee).  The additional revenues will be used to care for the orphan children.
  • 100% of your contribution goes directly to Project Winnie.  Lee Sisters is a 501(c)(3) charity organization.
